the catan catastrophy
i love(d) to play "siedler von catan". only we taught it to a friend yesterday who plays professionally and who had a - in my opinion - rather egoshooter-like attitude towards playing. i freaked out, insulted everybody and almost cried.
i'm sorry 'bout that but i still insist.
after all the game is called "SETTLERS of catan" not "warlords of catan", isn't it? so i imagine Catan to be like the Shire and all the players are supposed to be Hobbits, that care for each other and have fun. Sure after an hour and a half one of them will win, but they don't destroy each other! the other players just happen not to win, you see
anyways, tomorrow i'll go buy me a deck of patience-cards to play against myself like my grandmother does when no-one else is available to play canasta with her (a game i also love, in which you are also not supposed to destroy each other).
just in case i'm really the only one who likes Hobbit-Catan.
ps: those who know me will sure be able to tell where my place at the table is. there's this tiny little hint in the picture. can you find it?

feuerfisch - Do, 6. Jan, 15:18
hmm..
i personally perfer cooperative gameplay, too - that's why i play a mmorpg with absolutely no combat in it (www.atitd.com), but there's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition.
the one thing many people have a problem grasping, i think, is that an attack on your avatar, or your catanian city, or your units in a strategy game, is no personal attack on yourself. of course we prefer our units/avatars to survive unwounded, and i admit that i once cried during a warhammer game when my carefully trained and equipped hero was slaughtered by an orc horde, but it's just a game, just fun.
i guess this is because, especially in shooter and strategy games, most grown up players put a lot of emphasis on proper rules of engagement. congratulating your fellow player on their victory (the common phrase is "gg" for "good game"), and realizing that they are not an enemy, but simply another player, helps a lot in having fun while playing.
i guess what i want to say is: take it easy feuerfisch, it's really just a game, and no actual catans get hurt or killed during it ;)
and i also use all these mean little action-cards against my fellow players, only i think it's more fun to use them against players that are approximately as strong as i am, best used against those who are stronger, of course.
i would just never take the last resource of somebody who has just lost everything anyways, just because i can, you know.
